Herding Hemingway's Cats by Kat Arney

So far we’ve met RNA in a few of its guises: as spliced, edited messenger RNA, carrying the instructions that tell cells to make proteins, and also as circles doing … whatever the hell it is they’re doing. But RNA is far from a merely passive messenger, patiently shuttling instructions from DNA to the protein-making machinery. Just as Julia discovered by doggedly digging into her confusing results until they revealed the presence of circular RNA, one of the major roles of RNA was revealed by looking at seemingly baffling findings from a new direction. And it all started with a quest to make a more purple petunia.
Note
1 The story of Bcr-Abl is a triumph of scientific detective work that transformed the way we think about cancer treatment. Read more about it in Jessica Wapner’s excellent book, The Philadelphia Chromosome.
